|Alarm in the Russian forest
38 x 54 cm; gouache on paper; painted 1996.
My book Snow Bird told the imaginary story of an eastern bar tailed godwit's migration from the Russian tundra to New Zealand.
At the time it was written it was generally assumed that the birds spent several weeks in transit, with stops along the way where
adventures such as this could befall them. Now it is known they do the entire journey in one massive flight -
a truly stunning feat, but unfortunately far less dramatic!
